[Fashion & Style] ‘Wives’ Handbag collection by Nigerian knitwear designer Buki Akib

[Fashion & Style] ‘Wives’ Handbag collection by Nigerian knitwear designer Buki Akib

I came across Darkroom when I was walking to work. Located on Lambs Conduit Street the showroom houses some of the coolest and unique handmade items many of which have been inspired by Africa.

I was unable to attend Buki Akib’s launch but am completely in love with her latest collection! A knitwear graduate of Central Saint Martins, Akib spends her time split between London and Lagos – which is a clear inspiration for her latest collection which has been inspired by the wives of Fela Kuti.

As a follow up to her critically acclaimed menswear collection FELA, the WIVES collection offers luxury women’s bags inspired by the extravagant Fela Kuti and his twenty-seven wives. Buki’s eclectic mix of textures, pattern and colour captures a unique African style that has long been an obsession of Darkroom. We are extremely excited to be working with Buki and are particularly proud to support her in the use of Nigerian-based artisan weavers who hand-make the wonderful bags.
