[Iam:thenublk] Avi McClain of Contemporary Negro: ‘Bringing back what never should have left’

Published on July 16th, 2012

Introduce yourself

My name is Avi (Ahhhh-Veeee). I am a graphic designer and I run a blog and clothing brand called ‘Contemporary Negro’. Cn is all about representing roots and culture through fashion. The main focus is about putting a contemporary twist on things of the past present and future that should not be forgotten. Representing your roots should never be “out of style”. I have a strong belief in this, so the products I make are timeless.

Favourite song lyric

“Math Problem, take all the people you know…add that number up with all the people you dont…Final number, sum, total of the people that wont…break me down, shake me up, or fade my style…”

- Mathematics, Mos Def

I’m inspired by

The late 80s and early 90s, when black roots and culture were present in the education systems, fashion, and in all forms of media.

My icons past/present

Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, KRS-One, Queen Latifah, Mos Def, the list goes on…

Thenublack philosophy

“Representing your roots and culture should NEVER be out of style!”
