introduce yourself

I’m a bit of a creative junkie. From playing with clay, to photography, to working production at New York Fashion Week—I enjoy tangling myself with artistic adventures. I’m also a blogger. I started my blog, The Creative Cookie, in 2008 as a way to hold myself accountable for being consistently creative. I mostly feature fashion related posts but I love covering causes too. My dream is that the blog will expand to include content that merges creativity, fashion, and philanthropic causes, but for now it’s growing organically. I’m committed to using original photography, so I personally attend all the events that I write about. I’m always on the go.

who and what inspires you?

I’m inspired by positive people, magical places, fabulous storytellers, childhood memories, and the symphony of birds perched outside my window.

icons past & present

I’m not sure if I have any icons per se but I admire avant-garde filmmaker Maya Daren, poet Audre Lorde, designer Bonnie Cashin, and Janet Jackson’s style sensibilities, especially from the 80s and 90s.

Introduce yourself

My name’s Nicole. I’m a 25-year old music head/blogger currently living in Washington, D.C. I work as an Assistant Photo Editor for a non-profit newspaper and website, and I freelance as a photographer/music writer. I’m a bit of a random nerd who loves everything from waxing poetic on music and design (especially from the 1960s era), films and books, thrift shopping, and fancying myself a chick cool enough to crack a good joke every once and awhile. The jury is still out on that one.

Who and what inspires you

Creatively, I’m inspired my designers who can use the simplest image or typography to create the biggest statement. It shows they understand the impact that minimalism and simplicity have even in the midst of chaotic design and ideas. They’re able to isolate what’s really important, delivering both strong message and cool concept by using color and composition wisely.

Also, people who have such a database of creative references from which to draw for when it’s time to find a concept or treatment for a story. My boss is the best at this! And it drives me nuts because I’m steady trying to get on his level! I’m inspired people who are passionate about their passions, cultures, literature, films… Almost anything can be that point of reference for creativity if you’re open to recognizing it.

Spiritually, I’m inspired by people who, despite whatever is going on in their life, still can have an optimistic and positive disposition and see that those moments of heartache or discomfort last but a blip, but that their joy is something they can choose to have forever.

As a woman, I’m inspired by fearless women, and those who thrive and excel in areas that at one point were not accessible to them.

So thenublack featured Ayra Kip on Monday and she mentioned Art Rules Aruba, a program which herself and twin sister who are part of The Pancake Gallery Have put on. I’ve been following the progress of ARA, and it’s gone from strength to strength – getting a lot of support not only from Aruba but also gaining sponsorship from major companies such as Adidas, Ernst & Young, and Coca Cola!

With various disciplines, ARA has drafted in a great team of experts including London based Justin McKenzie and Jason ‘Motet’ Hicks of Uprock who’ll be involved in teaching successful applicants skills in Graphic Design and Djing. They’ve already selected the first 125 students….wish I was one of them, lol. I can’t wait to see the end result of the ARA program, I really love what the Pancake Gallery have done for their native country Aruba.

Coming to the Island of Aruba, get ready as The Pancake Gallery Foundation kicks off its first edition of Art Rules Aruba on July 16^th 2010.

Art Rules Aruba is an educational Arts Program for the Youth of Aruba that offers a 2 week intensive “summer” workshop program in 7 disciplines of the Arts including, Dance, Theatre, Poetry & Rap, Djing & Music Production, Photography & Design, Fashion and a bonus workhop in film.

Presented by an international team of artists, directors, producers, dj’s dancers and actors, Aruba’s teens will experience an international exchange of Arts with teachers coming from cities including London, Amsterdam, New York, Washington, Rotterdam, Qubec and of course homegrown Aruba!!

on July 19^th classes will start with 250 kids in the age group of 14-21 getting the opportunity to participate, devided in the following disciplines, Dance, Theatre, Djing & Music production, Fashion, Poetry & Rap, Photography & Design and film.

One Year On

So, today will be one year since Pres. Obama’s inauguration. I’m not going to be ignorant and ignore the ups and downs so far but I do want to highlight the momentous event that was the 21st of January 2009…because it was one of the most inspiring (and coldest) moments of my life to date. Seeing folks that had been around during the civil rights movement, their faces strewn with tears of elation at the fact that a dream had finally come true in America was really touching. The whole time I was there, it was like a never ending party, a little surreal at times – but something that has definitely inspired me and hopefully will inspire you too.
